By guest blogger & Summer student Anna MccarthyI am currently studying Social Service Work, and my experience at Multifaith Housing Initiative has helped me understand how closely housing connects to the social services field. I first came to MHI as a student placement and was fortunate to have the opportunity to continue working with the organization through Canada Summer Jobs. Through this experience, I have learned that housing is about much more than having a place to live. Before my placement, I had very little knowledge about subsidized housing or the impact that safe and affordable housing can have on individuals and families. Working at MHI opened my eyes to the challenges many people face and showed me how stable housing can provide security, dignity, and a foundation for a better future. One of the biggest things I have learned is the true value of community and what it means to me. Community is not just about the people and places around us, but also about making sure people feel supported, included, safe, and that they belong. Housing plays an important role in creating that sense of community. Having a safe and stable home gives people the opportunity to build relationships, feel connected, and create a stronger future for themselves and their families. My experience at MHI has also helped me think more about my future career. Before my placement, I did not realize how many different areas of social services I could work in or how closely housing connects to the work I want to do. While I am still exploring my career path, I now have a greater interest in working in an area where I can support individuals and families and make a positive difference in my community. Through Canada Summer Jobs, I have developed my communication, teamwork, organization, and professional skills while gaining confidence in myself and my abilities. I am especially grateful for the team I have worked with at MHI and for the knowledge, support, and relationships I have gained through this experience. Without Canada Summer Jobs, I would not have had the opportunity to continue working at MHI after my placement and discover an area of work I previously knew very little about. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and for everything this experience has taught me. It has changed the way I understand housing, strengthened my interest in social services, and helped me grow both personally and professionally. MHI’s participation in the Canada Summer Jobs program was made possible with the support of MP Mona Fortier, a strong champion of the program and its investment in meaningful employment opportunities for young people. Her support helped MHI welcome a summer student and provide valuable hands on experience in affordable housing and community development.
