As rents increase and employment opportunities are reduced, the need for affordable housing is increasing every year. Hundreds of families are trying to make do while they wait for housing that is safe and affordable. It can take up to ten years for a family to be offered a subsidized home through the City of Ottawa. That means that, every night about 1,200 people (including 200 families) sleep in shelters because they have no safe place to live. This makes it virtually impossible to provide a stable family life, consistent education and proper nutrition for children.
It is destabilizing for children and a great source of anxiety and worry for parents. The members of MHI believe that more should be done to improve circumstances for families who want to create a stable, safe environment for their children.
