Communications & Marketing Committee works closely with MHI’s Manager of Communications and Marketing. We suggest and write stories, proofread text, photograph people and events, interview people, provide oversight of the website, suggests social media content, conduct media outreach, and provide advice to MHI on these subjects. Education or experience in communications and marketing are assets. Overall, we support MHI in its efforts to raise awareness for affordable housing, promote fundraising activities, and engage key audiences.
The Development Committee identifies properties suitable for acquisition, reviews and provides advice on development opportunities and plans, supports efforts to access grants and financing, and helps oversee project design, community engagement, construction and evaluation. We welcome anyone with an interest and knowledge or experience with housing markets and the financing of affordable and non-profit housing. Together, the committee members are or become familiar with affordable housing policies, plans and priorities at various levels of government, and make efforts to keep up with the best practices of other housing providers. Members have experience or an understanding of urban planning, inclusive and accessible design, environmental construction, contracts and contract negotiation, and project management.
The Finance Committee welcomes volunteers who are interested and experienced in financial management. Education in this field and professional designations are assets, as is experience working on or with financial management committees. These qualities enable us to review and monitor MHI’s financial information to ensure the organization is operating on solid financial ground. This work includes overseeing the organization’s annual audit and providing advice on the financial feasibility of new projects. We ensure MHI’s financial management is healthy and in compliance with accounting principles and best practices.
Governance Committee members have knowledge and experience in business management and leadership, including Risk Management, Information Management, Evaluation, Planning and Reporting, Human Resources management such as building senior leadership and compensation. Among other activities, members draft and review policies and procedures, and oversee HR management. The committee’s goal is to ensure MHI’s Board of Directors have the appropriate policies and structures in place which allow for MHI to nurture planning, protect assets and deliver results. Healthy governance at MHI ensures the organization can attain its objectives in a manner consistent with leading-edge governance standards, good business practices and our multifaith collaborative culture.
The Fundraising Committee suggests activities to fundraise, and provides advice and support to MHI’s Manager of Fund Development. Committee members liaison with faith groups and partners to support their efforts to raise funds for MHI and to strengthen these key relationships. At a broader level, committee members work to enhance MHI’s fundraising model and processes to ensure the organization’s long-term financial health. Philanthropic experience - developed corporately or through helping at charitable events - is an asset, but we welcome volunteers who are keen to fundraise in any way they can.
Membership & Outreach Committee members liaison with current and potential faith groups to encourage membership to MHI, and to strengthen and expand relationships. Also, members develop and nurture relationships with Religious and Civic Patrons to gain support for MHI’s mission and vision and inclusiveness within MHI housing communities. Promotion of MHI initiatives among faith-based and secular peers is an important function for these committee members and indeed all volunteers for it strengthens and grows the organizations membership base and reputation as an important affordable housing provider in the region. This committee is heavily involved in executing MHI’s National Housing Day celebrations, and speaking at faith groups events.
