History of Somerset Gardens
Somerset Gardens is an innovative housing partnership among the Multifaith Housing Initiative, the private sector (Teron Inc.), the City of Ottawa, the provincial and federal governments.
This 10-storey building, with 119 one-bedroom units is a mixed-tenure housing in downtown Ottawa that gives lower- to moderate-income households the opportunity to own their homes without spending more than 30 per cent of their income on housing. Somerset Gardens also provides safe and affordable rental housing to households on the City’s social housing waiting list. MHI owns and operates 10 one-bedroom units in Somerset Gardens and offers these as rental units to low-income households. The property is located downtown Ottawa at Somerset and Elgin, located within walking distance to grocery stores and close to transit, parks, and the Rideau Centre (13 minute bus ride). The apartments feature large windows, five appliances and a balcony. The building’s roof is accessible to all residents and provides a shared green space where people can gather. |
Living in Somerset Gardens has meant a huge drop in stress. . . It’s clean, new, safe . . . I know what my housing costs are . . . half of what I was paying before . . . I feel very lucky to have found MHI. |
